ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the effects of COVID-19 on the world economy. Though the economic repercussions of any pandemic are more quantifiable once economies have had a chance to recover, the immediate effects are more glaring in a world dependent on global trade. In an attempt to understand the ripple effects COVID-19 on trade, supply, and demand coming to a halt, we highlight the most vulnerable industries and regions as well as the economic ramifications on everyday life. From pre-COVID-19 conditions to political ramifications and conflicts, to projected job losses as a direct repercussion of COVID-19, this chapter aims to highlight how a pandemic leaves lasting effects on the world economy.
ABSTRACT
A woman with acute abdominal pain was admitted to hospital with suspected cholecystitis. In addition to abdominal pain, she had vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhoea and symptoms of pyrexia. She had no symptoms from the respiratory tract, but was later found to have COVID-19. A number of patients have presented with similar symptoms at our hospital. This has led to temporary changes in our procedures for handling and investigating patients with acute abdominal pain.
